Setting the Placement of Column Legends

If your question contains columns, Builder allows you to set the placement of the column legend headers. You can choose to show the legends at the top, bottom, both (top and bottom), or customize the placement by specifying the row you want it to appear above.

Tip:  The question must contain columns for these options to be available.

1:  Column Legends

1.1:  Column Legends: Top

By default, the column legend shows along the top of the answer options, as shown in the example below.

To have the column legends show along the top of the answer options in a question, select the question so it appears in Builder's stage. Then click on the "Basic" style link found in the top, right corner of the question.

The "Question Display Options" window will appear. Locate the "Column Legends" menu and choose "Top." Then select "Save and Close" and the column legend will be set for the question.

1.2:  Column Legends: Bottom

Example:

To have the column legends show along the bottom of the answer options in a question, select the question so it appears in Builder's stage. Then click on the "Basic" style link found in the top, right corner of the question.

The "Question Display Options" window will appear. Locate the "Column Legends" menu and choose "Bottom." Then select "Save and Close" and the column legend will be set for the question.

1.3:  Column Legends: Both (Top & Bottom)

Example:

To have the column legends show at both the top and bottom of the answer options in a question, select the question so it appears in Builder's stage. Then click on the "Basic" style link found in the top, right corner of the question.

The "Question Display Options" window will appear. Locate the "Column Legends" menu and choose "Both." Then select "Save and Close" and the column legend will be set for the question.

2:  Custom Column Legends

Builder allows you to choose exactly which row(s) you want the column legend to show above. A legend will always appear at the top of the answer options (unless the column legends have been reconfigured, as described in the examples above) and you can specify where additional legends will be repeated. This is very useful for questions with a lot of rows that may require the respondent to scroll down.

Example:

To have the column legends show at specific rows within a question, select the question so it appears in Builder's stage. Then click on the "Basic" style link found in the top, right corner of the question.

The "Question Display Options" window will appear. Locate the "Custom Column Legends" menu and enter the row number(s) that you want the legend to appear above. For example, enter 10 to show a legend above row 10. To enter multiple rows, separate the row numbers with a comma (no spaces), e.g., 5,10,15. Then select "Save and Close" and the column legend will be set for the question.
