The survey editor allows you to assign and track concepts that appear randomly to respondents. You also have the ability to save and use the logic conditions later in the survey. For instance, if a respondent views concept B, you can show a group of questions that only apply to respondents that were shown concept B. This method involves setting a quota for each group, so you also have the ability to control how many respondents are shown each concept overall.
This document explains the 4 steps required to do this:
- Step 1: Add "randomly assign" quota
- Step 2: Add concepts and follow up questions
- Step 3: Add block element to each concept
- Step 4: Add logic condition for each block element
Step 1: Add "randomly assign" quota
The quota element will allow you to randomly show a concept to respondents, track which concept the respondent viewed in the report and create logic conditions based on which concept the respondent viewed.
First, select the quota icon under the structural elements in the survey editor toolbar, then click "Insert."
Add the quota title in the area provided. To add cells to the quota, click "Edit Quota."
The quota editor window will appear. In the "Maximum Number of Respondents" field, enter a numeric value that will designate the maximum number of respondents. (Note: The asterisk (*) sets the limit to infinite, or "open quota.") Click the "+row" button to add cells to the quota.
The "Quick Quotas" pop up window will appear. Select "randomly assign quotas (+quotas)" from the drop down menu, then add the quota groups that will be used to randomly assign the concepts as rows in the area provided. Enter each quota group on its own line. Click "OK" when you're done.
The new quota groups will appear in the quota editor. If you wish to place a limit on the number of respondents in each group, replace the asterisk (*) with a number for each quota group. The asterisk means the quota is infinite. Once the limits are set, click "Save."
Once you are done setting up the quota groups insert a page break by clicking on the "Page Break" button below the element, then select "Add Survey Element" to begin setting up the concepts.
Note: there should be a page break before and after the quota element in this instance.
Step 2: Add concepts and follow up questions
The number of concepts and follow up questions will vary in a survey. In our example we will show 3 concepts and each will have one follow up question. Each concept will be added to the survey via a comment element. Note that the comment element does not have answer options so it does not appear in the report. The quota element will track which concept was viewed because we will add logic conditions to the concepts based on the quota in step 4.
Select the Descriptive Content icon under Standard elements in the survey editor toolbar, then click "Insert."
A new comment element will appear in the stage area of the survey editor. Enter the concept text and/or image in the area provided. Then select "Add Survey Element" (a page break is optional here). In our example we want to show the concept and the first follow up question on the same page, so we will not insert a page break.
Our follow up question will use a single-select element. Select the element type in the survey editor toolbar and the element will appear on the stage area of the survey editor. Enter the question text and answer choices. At this point you may add additional questions on the same page or a new page. In our survey we will move on to the next concept and select. To do this, add a page break and then select "Add Survey Element."
Repeat the steps above for each concept. We added concept B and concept C, each with a follow up question, to our survey. This is shown in the question tree in the image below.
Once our concepts and their follow up questions are in place we are ready to add block elements to each.
Step 3: Add block element to each concept
Block elements are a nice way to organize sections in a survey that appear together and use the same logic. We will use a block element to group the corresponding concept and follow up question together. That will enable us to add a condition to each block in step 4 so the group shows to respondents based on the quota. For additional information on adding block elements, click here.
Click on the concept in the question tree and the element will appear in the stage area of the survey editor. The block element must be placed before any questions that will be added to the block. Select the "+" button" that appears above the comment element so the block element will appear before the concept.
Select the block icon under structural elements in the survey editor toolbar to create a new block element, then click "Insert."
A new block element will appear in the stage area of the survey editor. Enter an appropriate title in the area provided. Then select the questions with the "add to block" option by clicking on them. This will add them to the concept block. The block will add elements in descending order based on the question tree hierarchy. The next element that can be added will show the question label and text next to the "+" icon. We added the comment and follow up question to the block, shown in the image below.
Repeat the steps above for each concept group. The image below shows the blocks we created for concept A, concept B and concept C in the question tree.
Step 4: Add logic condition for each block element
The last step is to add logic to each block element, based on the quota element we set up in step 1.
Note: if your survey has multiple concepts with only one set of follow up questions that are not unique to each concept, you can skip step 3 and simply add the logic conditions outlined in step 4 directly to each concept element.
Select the first block element in the question tree and the block will appear in the stage area of the survey editor. Next, select the corresponding quota group from the "Show If" menu. Our first block contains concept A, so we selected "Group_A" for our condition. The show if condition will appear in the block window once it's been selected.
Follow the same steps for each block element that contains a concept.
In the Report:
Create a segmented report based on the quota groups in order to view which quota group answered each question. Remember that in step 1 we created groups A, B and C and each concept was given a logic condition based on the quota groups. The example below shows that Q3 was shown to Group A, which means they were shown concept A; Q4 was shown to Group B, which means they were shown concept B; and Q5 was shown to Group C, which means they were shown concept C.
